Reseller hosting API update

Reseller hosting API update

Posted by Rik on August 26th, 2010

To make our resellers’ lives a little bit easier we have made a couple of changes to our reseller web hosting API today. If you are using our API you can now use it to order and delete these additional products; MS Exchange mailboxes, premium mailboxes and MS SQL databases. As well as these new products, with this update you can also associate a direct debit with the API so that chargeable services can be ordered through it. The Reseller API is free with the Heart Internet Reseller Professional.

Key features include:

  • Setup, delete, deactivate and reactivate hosting packages.
  • Lookup, register, transfer and renew domain names.
  • Add web hosting features, list web hosting packages, resend welcome emails.
  • Auto authenticate customers into hosting and domain control panels.
  • XML Interface with code examples in Perl, PHP and Ruby.
  • Extensive documentation to help you get started.

Your exclusive API activation code and the supporting documentation can be found in your Reseller Control Centre: https://customer.heartinternet.co.uk/manage/api

Backup multiple MySQL DB on multiple hosting accounts at once

Backup multiple MySQL DB on multiple hosting accounts at once

Posted by Ben on May 11th, 2010

We make a big song and dance about  backing up your website and never pass on the opportunity to remind you to do so (when was the last time you did?).  It is free and only takes a few clicks to complete. However, we also know that for our resellers who want to offer managed backup services to their clients, having to log in to their customer’s control panels to do this can be time consuming.

If you are a Heart Internet reseller you can now back up all of your customer’s databases from within the Reseller Control Centre with just a few clicks. (The screen shot below has had the domain names erased)

To get started log in to your RCC and in the ‘Features’ section click on ‘MySQL Backups’ which will take you to https://customer.heartinternet.co.uk/manage/mysql-backups.cgi

Is re-marketing all it’s cracked up to be?

Is re-marketing all it’s cracked up to be?

Posted by Matthew on April 9th, 2010

For the past 3 weeks or so I started noticing a lot of Boden banners appearing all over the internet, some in places I could kind of understand (Hotmail for mass marketing) and others I couldn’t fathom why they had booked advertising on there (e.g. a WordPress social bookmarking website).

As an online marketer I never just look at a banner, I quickly analyse how it looks and how well targeted it is. The Boden banners all got at least a B+ for design but a D- for booking. I put this down to the possibility they had purchased inventory from a blind network and some of that was on badly targeted sites. That is one of the risks of using blind networks so I just shrugged my shoulders and continued browsing the internet.

That is until today when I saw one on http://www.webdesignerwall.com which really had no place being there. I then notice an ‘I’ in the bottom right corner…

Upon hovering over it this message appeared…

As an inquisitive kind of chap I clicked on it and I was taken to this page…

Boden are using a re-marketing service to display their banners to people who have visited their website without buying anything. A sound idea in theory but the only reason why I had been on the website was because of Econsultancy’s recent review of Boden’s website re-design (http://econsultancy.com/blog/5557-boden-site-review-2).

You could argue that there is no way the technology could understand my motivations but there lies the problem if you use re-marketing to blanket all your site’s visitors, it is no more intelligent than booking mass inventory across multiple industries.

What is re-marketing?
Re-marketing is based around the principle of having a second attempt at converting a customer or trying to get them to buy more. For example, if you sell electrical goods online you can show your MP3 player ads to those people who visited the MP3 player section as they navigate across other websites. Alternatively you could cross-sell, up-sell, and promote other relevant products such as speakers, cases or headphones.

With Google’s recent introduction of re-marketing functionality to AdWords (they are calling it ‘Interest marketing’) this is no longer the preserve of large advertisers, anyone can do it at no more cost than if you were advertising on their content network (because that is what is uses). If you choose to dabble in this, here are a few tips to get you started…

Segment and target
Don’t just group everyone who came to your home page and bounced in to one mega list. Target visitors who put items in to your basket but didn’t buy or target visitors who viewed a specific product, and then tailor the advertising message accordingly.

Only target specific sites or categories
Pick and choose where your banners will appear, be it by category or identifying specific websites. For example, Boden should have chosen to be shown on related categories such as fashion sites and sites where their core target audience go to, rather just wherever I went.

Tailor the ads based on the page/ product they viewed
There is no point in re-marketing to people if you use the same message across the board. For example, Boden keep trying to sell me women’s clothes because they had no idea who I was or what my motivation was based on just a page view of their home page. If they had tracked me looking at men’s shirts, they would have stood a better chance of converting me if they displayed those products to me on their banners.

You can find Google’s information about their re-marketing services here http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=27765. Even if you don’t want to use their service just yet it is worth a read so you understand what it is and when you may want to use it in the future.

New Customer Navigation Features

New Customer Navigation Features

Posted by Ben on April 6th, 2010

We are writing to let you know of two small (But highly useful) additions to the customer control panel. The focus we had when creating these features was “How can we improve control panel navigation” and as a result we implemented both “Quick Find” search and added a breadcrumb navigation, we believe with these new additions to the CP that our customers can now locate pages & settings much faster than before.

Quick Find
Quick Find is located on the customer control panel index and acts as a smart search box, you simply type what you’re looking for e.g. “Domains” and Quick Find will return pages associated with that keyword, for example: Domain Search, Transfer a Domain, Manage Domain Names etc. Quick Find should eliminate all those extra clicks you would previously need to navigate the control panel and get to the content you need much faster.

Breadcrumb Navigation
Breadcrumb navigation has been implemented at the top of the customer control panel to help users identify their current location and also act as a way to jump to the parent pages associated with the current page.

For example if a user was within “Payment Gateways” within the HostPay section, the navigation would be as follows:
Reseller Control Centre > HostPay > Payment Gateways

We hope you find the new additions useful.

Best Free Font Resources

Best Free Font Resources

Posted by Ben on December 14th, 2009

Below you will find a list of the best free font resources that you can use to add a touch of creativity to your web pages.

blog_searchfonts
Search Free Fonts
http://www.searchfreefonts.com/
Search Free Font’s has an impressive archive of over 13,000 fonts! The sections are well categorised, with the added option to browse by letter. With every font style you have the ability to type your own text to generate a preview of how it renders, which is a nice way to test before you download. There is also the option to rate and review each font style.

blog_dafont
DaFont
http://www.dafont.com
An extensive resource of fonts with various licensing options. I like DaFont for it’s clear layout and navigation which allows you to browse fonts with ease. DaFont has a strong user base with new fonts being added regularly, you also get to make comments and also browse fonts by author. You can preview each font style before you download by adding your own custom text and checking whether it’s suitable or not.

blog_1001
1001 Free Fonts
http://www.1001freefonts.com/
A popular resource of free fonts, each with a large preview of the typeface. 1001 Free Fonts has always been a great resource, but it’s starting to get overshadowed by newer font libraries. If you’d prefer not to spend countless hours downloading fonts, 1001 Free Fonts allows you to download the entire library for $19.99.

blog_findfont
Identifying Fonts – What The Font?!
http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
This is my favourite tool for helping to identify font sets that otherwise would go unfound. What makes it so good is it’s complete ease of use and impressive accuracy on the results. You simply upload an image/screenshot of the font (the clearer the better) and What The Font!? will work it’s magic and tell you what that font set is or its closest match and also how to get it.

blog_sifr
Embedding Fonts
http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/sifr/
Use sIFR to embed font’s into your webpage, this method uses modern technologies to replace short passages of plain browser text with text rendered in thetypeface of choice, regardless of whether or not your users have that font installed on their systems. Great if you wan’t to add a touch of creativity to your h1 tags!

Website Colour Scheme Inspiration & Tools

Website Colour Scheme Inspiration & Tools

sml_kulerKuler
http://www.adobe.com/products/kuler/
Kuler has been the preferred choice of many web designers (including myself) for creating the perfect colour scheme for quite some time now. Kuler contains thousands of user generated colour palettes, which you can use straight away or modify to your needs. New themes can be created from just one or multiple colours, with the added ability to upload an image to Kuler, which analyses and extracts the colours it contains to create a new theme. You can also engage with the Kuler community by rating and reviewing colour schemes.

sml_colourloversColour Lovers
http://www.colourlovers.com/
Colour Lovers is an amazing design resource which is built around a very active community of colour enthusiasts. Amongst the vast collection of schemes available you’ll find a wealth of information on current design trends & patterns. If you’re looking to do more than creating a new palette for your site and want to get involved with a community dedicated to colour and design, then I would certainly recommend taking a look at what Colour Lovers can offer!

sml_colourschemeColor Scheme Designer
http://colorschemedesigner.com/
I consider this a “Light” version of Kuler, where you can quickly create colour schemes and export your final palette in various formats, including html/css. This allows you to quickly and efficiently copy & paste the hex values of each colour so you can apply it to your design.

Useful Firefox Addons

ColorZilla
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/271
An extensive colour picker, advanced eyedropper and palette viewer that allows you to extract and work with colours found on websites with ease.

Features include:
Find out what CSS rules specify a given color
Eyedropper – get the color of any pixel in the browser window
Color Picker similar to ones found in Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro
Palette Viewer and editor
Webpage Color Analyzer
& Many, many more.

ColorSuckr
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13383
ColorSuckr allows you to right-click any image on the web and extract the 12 most common colors from it. You can then build color schemes from the results.

New – Free Premium HostPay Template Released

New – Free Premium HostPay Template Released

Posted by Ben on November 17th, 2009

It’s my pleasure to announce the release of our 3rd Premium style HostPay template. This web 2.0 style hosting template comes in four different colour variations: blue, red, green and grey and is available to all our Reseller hosting customers completely free of charge. Following on from the theme of our previous templates it’s CSS based, XHTML/W3C standards compliant and extremely easy to modify and adapt to your own brand, we’ve made everything as highly configurable as possible only using images where needed.

You’ll notice it’s very text heavy, not only will this benefit you from a search engine optimisation point of view but it also allows you to modify this to your own requirements very quickly (Plus it loads extremely fast!). We’ve added some fancy effects like rounded corners and text shadows for all the Firefox/Safari/Chrome users out there! Don’t worry it will still look great in Internet Explorer! :)

Feel free to leave your comments on this new template set. (Don’t forget to send us a link if you use this template for your own hosting company, we’d love to see it in action!)

Why Twitter is here to stay

Why Twitter is here to stay

Posted by Matthew on October 23rd, 2009

Twitter is becoming part of the fabric of search
Deals announced in the past couple of days will soon see status updates/ tweets added to the search results of both Microsoft’s Bing and Google search result pages (SERP). The sheer volume of information being entered in to twitter every minute has long been eyed up by the likes of Microsoft and Google as it offers them ‘real time’ search through topic trends, an area that even Google has publicly admitted it is lagging behind. This deal with twitter will give them access to instant and constantly evolving information their spiders could never hope to compete with, and it gives twitter its first major source of revenue!

It has its own eco-system
An entire eco-system has sprung up using the twitter platform such as twitter alerts, tweet scheduling, back tweet analysis, polls, group tweets, pictures, backgrounds, advertising… the list goes on. The more developers that come on board to create new tools and applications based upon Twitter’s platform the more likely people are going to find a use for it.

The sheer size of its user base
When it comes down to it, the number of people who use Twitter is massive! Although growth has started to slow down, it still pulls in close to 25 million unique visitors from the USA alone, as shown by compete.com’s unique visitor statistics.

Should you be on Twitter?
A lot of webmasters and business have jumped on board Twitter without really asking why? As with any form of marketing, be it newspapers, Email marketing, or paid search, Twitter is not suitable for everyone. But the reasons why you should not be on Twitter should be based upon those factors and not because you think it will have gone by 2010. It is important to understand Twitter is now firmly established as a major source of traffic for websites, a revenue generator for supporting businesses and is soon to become a vital source of data for the search engines so any question of whether it is simply a short term fad should be dismissed.
