There are a select group of WordPress plug-ins & widgets I go about installing as soon as I have set up WordPress, sometimes even before I have activated my theme of choice. In no particular order, below are the plug-ins & widgets I install within the first 24 hours without fail and think you should too…

Have your site’s visitors send secure messages to your email inbox with out exposing your email address.

Create bespoke page titles and other meta data or have it created dynamically based on your post/ page content. One of the great ‘fire and forget’ plug-ins.

Real time saver and ideal for non technical web masters (such as myself) who prefer point and click to getting their hands dirty with code.

Lets you use PHP within the WordPress HTML editor and adds a PHP enabled widget similar to the default text widget

There are countless plug-ins that add social bookmark icons to choose from but this is still one of the slickest and most comprehensive, and we use this on our site.

Turns comments left on your site in to pages as far as search engine spiders are concerned, increasing your site content and the frequency of fresh content, which both help with your SEO.
My Category order & My Page Order

One of those features that should really be pre-built in (and probably will be in version 3.0), these plug-ins let you change the display order of your pages and categories with a simple click and drag.

Automatically creates and updates a site map for your visitors to navigate and to make sure the search engine spiders are never more than two links away from content.
If you have any plug-ins or widgets that you install as standard across all your WordPress installs share it with us in the comments below.

(Sven’s link will take you to http://www.web-strategy.jp/wp_plugin/ps_disable_auto_formatting/, a plug in that disables the auto formatting within the visual editor – Matt)
Forgot a plugin to display the website in iPhone format
We are also missing one for HeartInternet Resellers? << if there is one being made hehe.
Your previous blog of lists of lists pointed had one entry that pointed to:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/headspace2/
as an alternative to the All in One SEO plugin (which like you I install straight away.
Have you/anyone had any experience of HeadSpace2?
Cheers

I haven’t used that one before but I might give it a whirl next time I do anything with WP, it looks pretty slick from the screenshots. I notice it has an import function for other SEO plug-ins as well.

Great list! A brand new plugin that may soon find its way on to this list is Cobalt WP Boost.
Check it out here:
http://frugaltheme.com/about/cobalt-wp-boost-plugin/
It allows blog owners to raise their WordPress Memory Limits with a couple of mouse clicks, as well as showing at-a-glance memory usage information. WordPress keeps its internal memory limit at 32MB, which is fine for a small-time blog; but if you’re trying to add any robust plugins for social networking or ecommerce applications, 32M will not suffice. This problem can only be expected to worsen with the release of 3.0 which, judging from the beta release, will consume a lot more memory itself without upping the 32MB limit.
I really like the iphone app plugin http://www.bravenewcode.com/products/wptouch/ This is definitely a must install now. Good call David!
