Any idea when PHP will be updated?
Hi H.I.,
It’s good to see H.I. keep updating their scripts to the latest stable version BUT… and I say BUT because it’s a big BUT… BUT it would also be GREAT to allow the end users ‘patch/upgrade’ the installed version with the software that has just been released.
I understand this can be tricky, depending on how the application has been written, but I think this becoming an important feature for the end users, since the release of updates due to bugs and security fixes are coming out faster these days.
(Do you remember the MS-DOS Debug where you were given OCTAL values to update the software… those were the days!
)
Keep up the good work!
The Gaffer.
Good news Jonathan.
I have a load of wp blogs hosted with you. All are screaming at me to update to 2.8… I know that the 2.71 installation was amended by your tech guys to circumvent the non-working cron functions from the Heart restrictions on http calls back to the server. Is this the case for the 2.8 installation?
Also how do I upgrade existing 2.7.1 installations without loosing the above cron functionality (pingback/trackback/scheduled posts).
Can also see openads – now called openx – has been updated to 2.8.1… great
Regards
Alex
@ Alex
Hi Alex, thanks for your feedback. Yes we put our pingback code in again, 2.8 does have some improvements that we hoped would mean we no longer needed this but in the end we did.
I’m not totally sure on the upgrade process, it really depends if the DB structure has changed much from 2.7 to 2.8 so I will check with one of our programmers on Monday and get back to you.
Jonathan
Hi Alex,
here is how to upgrade our patched version of WordPress:
Log in as administrator to your WordPress blog. If you are at version 2.7 there will be a message at the top of the screen which the customer can click which says “WordPress 2.8 is available! Please update now.” This brings up the Upgrade screen which says “Important: before upgrading, please backup your database and files. You can upgrade to version 2.8 automatically or download the package and install it manually:” There are two buttons: “Upgrade Automatically and Download 2.8″ Choose “Upgrade Automatically” which just takes a few seconds. Then do the following:
1. Go to http://extend.heartinternet.co.uk/pingback-patch.zip – save the file.
2. Go to the front page of the eXtend control panel
3. Click on FileManager
4. Display root directory of WordPress installation
5. Upload pingback-patch.zip from where you saved it to.
6. Right click on pingback-patch.zip in FileManager and choose
unzip. The patch will replace unpatched files.
If you have difficulties with pingbacks and/or trackbacks see the ‘HowTo’ documents pingback.html and trackback.html in the directory wp-docs on your WordPress site.
Hope that helps!
Thanks,
Jonathan
@ Tar,
We run PHP 5.2.10 and PHP4.2.9. Both are the latest versions. PHP 5 was recently updated to this version.
Hope that helps.

Nice work guys, any change of Magento Commerce being added to the list?
@ Michael
We have looked at Magento but have found that it is exceptionally resource hungry, we know that the guys at Magento are working in making it lighter but at the moment we recommend a dedicated server to run this.
Hope that helps.
