Resellers: How to get your customers to buy more

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Previously we have discussed how to get more of your customer to renew. In this post we will look at some ideas to get your customers to buy more.

Up-selling and cross-selling are not about the hard sell or getting someone to buy something they don’t really need or want.  When done properly the process should almost feel like a service in its own right.

One of the best examples online of up-selling and cross-selling is Amazon. Put an item in your basket and you are presented with “Customers who bought this also bought…” with the majority of the suggestions being more expensive items. If you go back to the home page it will have changed to show you items based on your browsing history along with items they feel are associated with that item e.g. putting a men’s skater brand watch in my basket had them showing me jewellery, trainers and accessories.

If they don’t know about it, they can’t buy it
It may sound obvious but the first step is to actually tell a client about the range of services you can do for them. So many websites keep information about their products features buried deep in the depths of their website never to see the light of day. To make sure, once a customer has signed up you should send a welcome email that lists all the services you perform.

Bundle services
Being able to buy everything from one place is always an attractive proposition to clients who don’t want to have to shop around. If your core product is web hosting for small sites you can look to provide creative services to help them with their banners, logo, HTML emails etc (and vice versa). Always keep an eye out for opportunities that may arise from any offhand comments a client may make about needing work in a particular area.

Writing an online survey

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Question markSurveys are great ways to collect data about pretty much anything to do with your website for example, how people use your website, what they think about your services, how they rate your products. However, writing a good survey with results you can analyse and data you can actually use is not as simple as many people think.

Below is some advice and a few tips on writing a survey for your website.

Keep it short
No one wants to be faced with dozens of questions especially online where attention spans continue to fall. To ensure as many questions are answered as possible and reduce the drop out rate aim for 10 questions or less. If you decide to split the questions in to multiple pages don’t create so many stages it feels like they are climbing a mountain and always let them know where they are in the process e.g. step 2 of 5.

Give them a reason to take part
Provide a strong incentive for the participant to complete the survey and give you their contact details. For example, if you are running a survey to benchmark your industry you could give them access to the results or if it is a survey about your service a competition is always popular e.g. Win a laptop.

Structuring the questions
How you structure your questions will make the difference between having data you can apply and having a large spreadsheet sitting untouched on your computer. Some tips include…

Interview with designerstalk.com’s Oliver Dale

designerstalk.com logo

We had a chat with Oliver Dale, creator of web designer forum designerstalk.com.

Could you provide a bit of information about yourself and designerstalk.com?
I’m a self taught web designer; I began working freelance for small clients before I gained my first job in web design working for an ISP on internal projects. I was eventually made redundant and then went on to work for a large design agency where I worked with clients such as Microsoft, Siemens and Bacardi. After a number of years there I started out on my own again but now focus on running my own online communities and web applications.

Designers Talk was started during my first stint as a freelancer; as I worked at home I missed the interaction with work colleagues. At the time I was a member of a now-dead forum for the web design magazine Cre@te Online. When the forum shut its doors I started Designers Talk and a lot of the members moved to using it instead. Today the site is used by a mix of professionals, students and people running their own design agencies.

Was there one ‘eureka moment’ which kick started the site’s success?

At the start, I put it a lot of work trying to get the name out there and gaining links from other more established websites like PixelSurgeon, Newstoday and k10k. One kick-start moment was on our fourth (and current) redesign when we reached the front page of digg.com – this sent thousands of visitors and we gained quite a bit of exposure from that.

Increase your ROI with negative keywords

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Google AdWords logo25% all of searches are totally brand new
If you advertise through search engine pay per click and use nothing but exact matches you will be running a very tight ship but you will also be missing out on a lot of potential (and relevant) traffic from keywords you haven’t thought of. With 25% of all searches thought to be completely unique (i.e. they have never been used by anyone ever before) you can’t possibly cover every single search term as an exact match.

Spending time to build up your negative keyword list will:

  • Save you a lot of money!
  • Increase your click through rate
  • Increase your quality scores
  • Increase your ROI

How can Twitter make money?

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

TwitterWith celebrity endorsements and the traditional media raving about it, in the past 6 months Twitter has exploded on to the main stream. So much so that according to compete.com, with nearly 55m visits a month, Twitter is now the 3rd most visited social network in the world.

However, they don’t actually make any money from the business! And this is starting to lead to questions about whether the site’s success is worth the financial investment if there is no return.  One theory is the business exists simply to be bought by the likes on Google or Microsoft who can afford to run services such as these at a loss with the data they gather worth the outlay.

However, if I was the owner and wanted to start rolling around on a bed of crisp £50 notes I would look at the following…

Double opt-in added to Mailing Lists in eXtend

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

What is ‘double opt-in’?
Using the single opt-in method people simply submit an email address to your website to be added to your list. The problem with this method is that people might submit their details incorrectly (creating a dirty database for you) or someone may have submitted their name for them without their knowledge (in effect turning you in to spam).

With double opt-in the submitted details are not blindly added to your mailing list. An email is sent to the account asking the owner to confirm that the email address is valid and they want it to be added to your list. If you do not get a response then the email address will not be included next time you send out an email. The name is only added to your distribution list if the account owner replies to your confirmation request email.

How to use it?
If you manually add a new email address to your list then everything will work the same as before. However if a person requests to be added to your mailing list through your website’s sign up form then they will be sent an email asking them to confirm that they wish their email address to be added to your list.

You will now see a list of confirmed users and a second list of unconfirmed users (i.e. they have entered their address, but not clicked on the link in the email). Your Emails sent through the mailing list script will only be sent to confirmed users. This change applies to all web hosting and reseller hosting customers.

Why have we made this change?
Double opt-in is the Email marketing industry’s best practice method of building and maintaining subscription lists. It helps to cut down on the amount of unsolicited Emails being sent and received and ensures your brand does not become associated with spam through no fault of your own. It also stops our servers being blacklisted for sending unsolicited email, it is vital that servers stay clear of blacklists as it stops you receiving form results submitted on your website (for example).

The new opt-in system will be effective from Monday 16th March.

The rise and rise (and rise) of social networking

Social networking lift off

Following on from our recent post about Hitwise’s research in to social networking in the UK yet more research is pointing to social networks as being THE growth area online.

Nielson Online has released findings in to the use of social networking around the globe and from a virtual standing start a few years ago their category has exploded in to 4th place.

Grouped with blogs to create a category named “Member communities” they have now over taken email and are only behind search engines, portals and PC software (I’d argue ‘adult sites’ would be in there somewhere if they were not consciously excluded in this type of research).

Other stats that jump out are:

- 67% of their research panel use member community sites

- 1 in every 11 minutes online are spent on these sites

- The 35 – 49 age category saw the biggest increase in uptake

- UK mobile web users are the most likely to access these sites through a hand set than any other country

- 69% of the UK online audience visit a member community site
