Test your website on the iPhone, with out an iPhone (and free)

Posted by Matthew on 28/01/2009

Killing a few minutes here and there, too lazy to turn on my lap top or just checking where on earth I am (I get lost very easily)mobile internet access via my iPhone has crept in to my everyday life very quickly.

Thanks mainly to the release of the 3G iPhone, mobile web browsing is growing at a fast rate. Recent statistics show that in under a year the iPhone has become the 7thmost used operating system when surfing the internet with a 0.44% market share. To put that in to context, its nearest rival, the Blackberry, has a 0.01% market share (Windows XP leads the field with 65.22%).

As mobile internet access grows month on month (the iPhone’s market share has grown 200% in under a year) ensuring your website is easy to read and navigate on a 320 x 480 screen and doesn’t take an age to load will become a standard part of a designer’s usability tests.

Rather than having to buy, borrow, beg or steal an iPhone you can now test your website in an iPhone web browsing environment on your PC Mac (for free) with marketcircle.com’s iPhoney. In their own words…

“iPhoney gives you a pixel-accurate web browsing environment—powered by Safari—that you can use when developing web sites for iPhone. It’s the perfect 320 by 480-pixel canvas for your iPhone development.”

Unfortunately it won’t let you make calls but it will let you perform usability tests from an iPhone user’s perspective for both portrait and landscape phone positions.

    You say we can use this on PC’s – iPhoney only works on Macs!

  2. Matthew says:

    @Vonspurter – thanks for the heads up, I have changed the post to reflect this

  3. There is an online tester at http://iphonetester.com/ which requires the use of Safari for Windows or Mac. It’s the best that I know of that works for Windows people.

  4. Matthew says:

    @Simon – Thats great, thanks

    If you’re on a mac you can download the iPhone SDK off the apple website (free). It includes an iPhone simulator with the real Mobile Safari. Comes with pinch zoom (with the alt key) out of the box too.

    You can try http://iphone4simulator.com as well I thought it was better than iphonetester.com
